Hanse Kudlich Tower

In order to preserve the memory of Hans Kudlich, the liberator of the peasants, in the memory of the people, a committee was established with its headquarters in Opava. This committee wanted to erect a worthy monument to the liberator of the peasants on the Strážiste hill near Úvalno, a monument that would correspond to his services to the peasants of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The first sketches of the tower were made shortly after 1900. As the construction was to be financed by donations and the sale of Kudlich’s postcards, letter clips, pictures and statuettes, more than 10 years passed before this plan could be considered for realisation. The tower was finally built in the form of a lookout tower according to the plan of the architect Oskar von Flegel with a budget of 28.000 CZK. On 21 September 1913, the 21.5 metre high tower was opened, and as part of these great celebrations it was handed over to the care of the municipality of Úvalno. Its location on the Strážiště hill at an altitude of 400 m above sea level offers a beautiful view of the landscape from Praděd to Lysá Hora from its two galleries. On the ground floor is the mausoleum of the native of Úvalen, Hans Kudlich. The text with the dedication above the tower entrance reads:

„”Dr. Hans Kudlich’s lookout tower
Monument to the abolition of robots, built 1913″“
